They'll be talking about this one on Frogtown Road for quite some time. In a down-to-the-wire, no-excuses grudge match, the NCCS Cougars knocked off the Brunswick Bruins 21-18 to move to 2-3 on the season. The boys left everything on the floor today, and they were rewarded for their efforts with a victory that will taste sweetly for years to come.
NCCS got off to a hot start to begin the game, making their first two field goal attempts, a midrange jumper from Kai Gokgol-Kline and a three ball from sharpshooter Dylan Svenson. Against a 2-3 zone for the first time this season, the Cougars were finally able to fire up some shots from outside the paint. With the help of some terrific free throw shooting (6 for their first 6), Brunswick kept things close by half's end, 14-12 Cougars.
In the second half, the pressure was at the max. Once the boys varsity game ended, the crowd doubled in size, and all eyes were on us. Brunswick upped the pressure on their zone, and the Cougars started turning the ball over. With just over three minutes to go, the score was tied, 18-18. In a final three minutes that lasted about fifteen real time, center Hudson Sonesson made a putback layup in heavy traffic to put the Cougars up 2. As Brunswick started full-court pressing, point guard Lucan Glennan took command of the offense and was able to bleed the clock down. Brunswick's pressure remained relentless, but each time they came back down the court to go for the tie, our defense, led by wing Dylan Reid, held strong. The game was sealed when Palmer "Old Reliable" Bowen made a crafty steal at half-court, setting up a Lucan Glennan free throw to ice the game. Final score: NCCS 21, Wick 18.
Take a deep breath everybody - we are back in action next Tuesday (1/28) when we play FCDS at home for a 3:15 game. See you then!
