What is an Athletic Trainer?

An athletic trainer is a health care professional who has received either a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited athletic training program and has passed a comprehensive exam administered by the Board of Certification for athletic training. In the state of Connecticut, an athletic trainer also holds a state license. Athletic trainers collaborate with physicians and other medical professionals to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic treatments, and rehabilitation of injuries and various medical conditions. Continuing education is required in order to maintain certification. Athletic trainers are an integral part of the sports medicine team and help ensure sport safety and appropriate medical supervision for athletes. Athletic trainers are commonly confused with a "personal trainer" although both professions work with athletes, personal trainers focus on achieving and maintaining fitness goals
