Morning Math Excites Lower School Families

More than 30 Lower School families braved the snowy weather last Friday morning to play math games. Children challenged their parents at some of their favorite math stations while practicing computational skills. "I can't believe how many children were excited to come to school early to do math," said one parent.

Parents had the opportunity to experience what children are learning in math class and became familiar with elements of the Bridges in Mathematics program.  Implemented this year in Lower School, the Bridges math curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation and open exploration.

In one popular game, children used numbered cards to come up with combinations that added up as close to 100 as possible. As children master this game, additional cards are added to the mix to create increasingly larger numbers.

“Our goal is to have children solidify their skills through fun games,” said Head of Lower School Kathi Holz. “The kids loved that they were actually beating their parents.”

Due to the success of this first math morning, Lower School is planning more of these mornings on the first Friday of each month.
