Country School Donates Food Essentials for the Holidays

This holiday season, New Canaan Country School has provided food essentials to many local families in need. Upper School students took the lead in collecting and donating Dove Bags, which provide a full day of food for a family, as well as a gift certificate for meat.  Working in coordination with Person-to-Person, a social service agency based in Darien, and New Canaan Social Services, Country School distributed Dove Bags to 63 lower Fairfield Country families. This is Country School’s largest Dove Bag donation to-date.
“Of the families we are helping, there are many who truly can’t afford groceries,"said Liz Carroll, an Upper School teacher who helped coordinate the effort. "For the others, our hope is that by freeing up money that would have otherwise been spent on groceries, families have a little extra cash to make the holidays special.”

In addition to the Dove Bag project, the Country School’s Parents’ Association organized a school-wide Fall Food Drive. They collected and donated nearly 2,000 lbs. of food to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. “That is equal to a full ton of food, about the same weight as a Clydesdale horse or a Volkswagen Beetle!” said Elaine McCarthy, a Parents’ Association member who organized the drive.
