Students at New Canaan Country School were greeted with a new basketball court on their first day of school Wednesday. The new area, called Kyle's Court, was redone in honor of Kyle Markes, an 11-year-old from Stamford who attended the school through fifth grade before dying of leukemia last Christmas Eve.

The new area, called Kyle's Court, was redone in honor of Kyle Markes, an 11-year-old from Stamford who attended the school through fifth grade before dying of leukemia last Christmas Eve.
Known as an outgoing, funny kid who was dubbed "The Mayor" of Yale-New Haven Hospital during his extensive treatments there, Kyle was a larger-than-life personality at the small school. And the idea of honoring him with a permanent memorial in the form of a basketball court was a no-brainer, according to Kirsten Rosolen, the head of middle school.
"We thought that this was a perfect way to remember him," Rosolen said. "I thought we could capture his spirit and that this would be a really good place to gather as a community. He loved to have fun -- and laughing and having fun with friends and playing basketball were all important to him while he was at school here. So we thought this was a great way to remember his optimism, his spirit and his love of basketball."
