Author Steven Kellogg Inspires Lower School Students

“Steven Kellogg is a superstar,” explains Lower School Librarian Jean Stevens. “Having him here, in person, was an absolute thrill for the kids - and frankly, for us too.”

Steven Kellogg, author and illustrator of over 120 popular children’s books including the classics “Pinkerton, Behave!” and “The Island of the Skog,” was on campus recently and spoke to students.
“Ever since I was a child, I loved writing stories and drawing pictures,” Kellogg told the children gathered in the Lower School library. “How do you know what to write about?” asked a student. “More than anything, I love to write about my pets.” More specifically, he chronicles the troubled and often comical relationship between Pinkerton, a Harlequin great dane and a feisty house cat named Rose. Their on-going antics continue to inspire him, he says. As he spoke, Kellogg drew pictures of Pinkerton and Rose and the children watched the story come alive in front of them.

“Inspiration is everywhere. Write about something you feel deeply,” the author advised. Apparently the students took this encouragement to heart. Parents reported the following day that their children came home and began to write and draw, all budding authors and illustrators themselves.
